SUSTAINABLE MOBILITY FOR ALL

Our Offer at COP27!

In anticipation of this COP, we ramped up our policy work on the Just Transition toward low-carbon development to influence global and country action on transport and sustainabilityThanks to our 56 Member organizations for their year-long effort to get us ready to engage with the international community on transport and climate change at COP27!

Under the helm of the SLOCAT partnership on Sustainable Low Carbon Transport, we partnered with the German Federal Ministry for Cooperation and Development, Transformative Urban Mobility Initiative, World Resource Institute, and Michelin to shape a dedicated Transport Day on November 15. It was a fantastic opportunity to remind the international community that transport is critical to meet the Paris Climate ambition. Thanks to all who joined us also at our publication launch events! We are proud to bring five important contributions that shape policy directions on the future of mobility.

  • E-mobility in Low-Income Countries in Africa – Finance, Governance, and Equity

African low-income countries (LICs) contribute less than one percent of global greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. Why then, should they invest in electrifying their mobility? Should they not address their most pressing development needs ahead of e-mobility? Based on interviews and surveys of key African transport stakeholders, and a review of the academic and gray literature on e-mobility, energy, policy, and finance, this paper explores the relevance, fairness, and cost of transitioning to e-mobility in 23 African LICs. The paper is jointly produced by a coalition of the UK Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO), UK universities through the Climate Compatible Growth and High-Volume Transport Programs, and the SuM4All Secretariat.

Launched on November 11, 2022. Link to paper.

  • Decision-Making Tool for E-Mobility Investments

How are various investment alternatives to electrify mobility evaluated? This paper outlines a simple and comprehensive decision-making tree to guide investment choices in cities—ranging from e-buses, e-bicycles, EV-charging networks, e-taxis, e-motor bikes, and e-kick scooters.  The paper is a production of the Partnership led by the Transformative Urban Mobility Initiative (TUMI) and the International Association of Public Transport (UITP), with Member organizations.

  • Electromobility and Renewable Electricity: Developing Infrastructure for Synergies

Electrification of transport will require a substantial scaling up of renewable electricity to contribute to the decarbonization of energy and transport sectors. Charging for a growing fleet of electric vehicles (EVs) needs to be managed in a way that does not threaten the grid’s stability or compromise other sectors' energy needs. Focusing on Low- and Middle-Income Countries (LMICs), this paper provides guidance on coordination needs between transport and energy decision makers. The paper is a production of the Partnership led by Sustainable Energy for All (SEforAll), the UK’s High-Volume Transport Applied Research (HVT) Programme, Transformative Urban Mobility Initiative (TUMI), and International Association of Public Transport (UITP), with Member organizations.

  • Empowering E-mobility In the Global South: The Case of Two Cities–Cuenca and Nairobi

Piloting the policy recommendations contained in “Sustainable Electric Mobility – Building Blocks and Policy Recommendations” in the cities of Cuenca, Ecuador, and Nairobi, Kenya, this paper reflects on the challenges faced and lessons learned in the process of establishing roadmaps of action toward sustainable e-mobilityProduced from the Partnership led by the Transformative Urban Mobility Initiative (TUMI), and the International Association of Public Transport (UITP) with Member organizations.

  • How to Unlock Public Transport for Climate and Sustainable Development: Six Areas for Action

The ambition to develop quality public transport has been insufficient, despite its centrality to reduce GHG emissions from transport. This paper emphasizes six vital strategic issues for reimaging and rethinking public transport to recover, thrive, and meet climate, health, access, and equity goals. It provides 30 recommendations for action, giving examples of how cities and countries have brought these actions to life. The paper is a production from the Partnership led by the World Resource Institute (WRI) and the World Bank, with Member organizations.
