SUSTAINABLE MOBILITY FOR ALL

An unusual year? Well, thank you for... staying with us through it all!

The Sustainable Mobility for All (SuM4All) Secretariat is grateful to its 56 member organizations, donors, partners, and network - including you. As we prepare to bounce forward to achieve sustainable mobility for all, we wanted to take a minute to reflect on this year's journey.

In January, we tagged 2020 as the "GRA in Action." Our goal for the year was to use the knowledge and the tools we developed over the past three years to mobilize action in countries. We secured the support of South Africa to benefit from this partnership and pilot the implementation of the Global Roadmap of Action Toward Sustainable Mobility (GRA) as the guiding policy framework for better investment and policy decisions based on data and evidence. In the first week of December, the Ethiopia Ministry of Transport requested the same support from the partnership for her country.

In parallel, we expanded our "Global Tracking Framework for Transport" by adding new transport indicators with global data coverage on our Transport Portal, which can be freely accessed on our website. We also developed a Global Sustainable Mobility Index score, which benchmarks each country's performance against the four goals of sustainable mobility: safety, green mobility, efficiency, and universal access. We also produced the "Mobility at a Glance: Country Dashboards" Report, which equips the international transport community with data to assess the transport and mobility system of 180 countries in the world against the four goals. It is time to start a new dialogue with countries based on where they stand and help them achieve their ambition.

During the 9th Consortium meeting held virtually in June, at the peak of the COVID-19 crisis, our members made a bold decision for SuM4All to stay focused on Transport's fundamentals and keep up with the work agreed in January. SuM4All member organizations were proactive in responding to the disruption in the transport sector caused by the pandemic. While closely following trends and interventions in the transport sector, SuM4All sought to fill urgent gaps in knowledge on Transport's most effective policies to mitigate disruption and adapt to the new reality.

Acknowledging the urgent need for radical transformation and reversing the business-as-usual in Transport, SuM4All has become more intentional about its contributions to sustainable development and prioritizing being part of climate change solutions.

In November, with the announcement of the Zero-Emission campaign from the UK as the host of COP26, we positioned the initiative in the run-up towards COP26. We leveraged the power of our platform to drive action for zero-emission Transport by participating in the Sustainable Innovation Forum and the Concordia Africa Summit Virtual Roundtable on Sustainable Mobility and the SDGs. We co-created the En Route to COP26 event with 12 other organizations, including Transport Decarbonization Alliance (TDA) and the World Resources Institute (WRI). These events provided us with unique opportunities to amplify our green mobility messages without losing sight of the other three goals - safety, universal access, and efficiency.

In the coming year, with efforts geared towards recovering from the impact of COVID-19, we will expand our country engagement, continue to address the glaring knowledge gap in the sector, and increase our global advocacy in the run-up towards COP26. SUM4All will contribute to the success of COP26, with the commitment to:

  • Launch the upgraded Global Roadmap of Action Towards Sustainable Mobility (GRA 2.0), which accounts for transport systems' resilience to climate risks and pandemics, as the global guiding policy framework for action; and use it to assist South Africa and Ethiopia in achieving sustainable mobility.
  • Launch actionable policy guidance on cutting-edge topics related to transport decarbonization, including digitalization and data-sharing between public and private operators, energy and transport nexus, gender inclusivity, and the sustainability of the e-mobility model.
  • Launch a series of events and advocacy campaigns between now and COP26 to mobilize action necessary to decarbonize the sector while showcasing good practice examples across every transport sub-sector that others can replicate.
  • Partner with other stakeholders to deliver a solid and evidence-based catalog of priority actions to scale-up investments and finance for transport decarbonization.

We hope that we can continue to count on your support and partnership to break new grounds as we reimagine the future of mobility.

 Thank you, and Happy Holidays!
