SUSTAINABLE MOBILITY FOR ALL

World Bank Open Learning Campus

Sustainable Mobility Requires a New Policy Approach Today

For decades, the planning and design of countries' transport systems have been shaped by project-by-project considerations. Today, transport systems are expected to serve long-term public policy objectives, including the UN's Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the Paris Climate Agreement. Ensuring that these new long-term objectives are achieved will require radical changes to the shape of transport systems.

As these dynamics are unfolding, many transport practitioners and decision-makers have been looking for structured and coherent guidance about ways to change the trajectory of transport and adapt to this fast-evolving context. Sustainable Mobility for All has stepped up to this challenge by developing a suite of tools and training country decision-makers in their use to ensure that policy and infrastructure choices are Paris-aligned and support the SDGs.

The World Bank’s Open Learning Course “Sustainable Mobility Requires a New Policy Approach Today” introduced participants to the new dynamics that are reshaping the transport sector, and the relevance of new adaptive tools for improved decision-making in transport. Participants were then trained in applying the suite of tools developed by the SuM4All partnership to their country contexts. Tools for improved decision-making include the Global Tracking Framework for Transport, Catalogue of Policy Measures, and the Selection Algorithm,

The first edition of this Four-module course drew more than 600 participants from over 140 countries in October 2021.
